I'm debating about whether to train for my first triathlon next spring ... does anyone have any helpful suggestions on effective training strategies?

Lifetime has triathlon training. I suggest participating in that. I could barely swim a lap when I began the training, but in 7 weeks, I was able to do my first sprint triathlon. It was fun. I came in last, but I did finish and I'm proud of my accomplishment.
The triathlon training was good, reasonably priced, and it was great to train as a team.

My first tri I didn't put in the necessary training time in the pool and I paid for it. Since then I have committed 2 to 3 days a week to swimming and have watched my swim time and confidence improve greatly. Not only does Lifetime provide you with tri training but you can attend masters swim classes both at the YWCA, YMCA, UofM and various pools around town. They range in cost but are well worth it to have a coach who gives you feedback and tips to improvement. If that's more than you care to do then I still suggest twice a week at least and ask good swimmers or lifeguards to give you feedback on your stroke. While you'll get conflicting suggestions sometimes, you'll find a faster road towards a comfortable stroke than if you just jumped in and started going on your own.
Also, google swim techniques / videos as there is a lot of resources online talking about good form in the water.
The best thing you can do however is signing up for an event. This sort of forces the issue and get's you out the door. Good luck and hope you enjoy Triathlon as much as I have.
