We eat a lot of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes. We buy organic as much as possible. We limit our intake of red meat to about once a month. I portion out servings of homemade soup and salads at the beginning of the week so we can grab something in a hurry if we don't have time to make something. And we really limit our consumption of processed foods.
You are doing amazing things to your family. I wish I could convice my friends and neighbors to do the same. They look at me wierd when my wife and boys eat healthy. Do you try convincing your friends to do so?
I utilize a home food delivery service that is all natural & organic foods , delivered to our home free of charge! It is done on a 3 or so month basis at a time so the bulk purchasing keeps price within our food budget and saves us a bundle in super market impulse buying not to mention the time saving, gas saving and frustration saving! Everything is also individually wrapped so there is no waste!! Healthy eating and economically sound! It's a winner! We interviewed many services before we selected this one and the reason I did select this was because it is not a pre-packaged deal ...I get to choose from this extensive product list what I want to feed my family. Two years now and can't imagine going back to the old way!
Recently, I have really cleaned up my eating. Since my 19 month old has been eating solids, I have been very careful about what she eats. I give her organic fruits and veggies whenever possible, limit her red meat and make sure her snacks are beneficial to her little growing body. I thought since I'm so careful with her, I should be more careful with what I'm eating.... I discovered the wonderful flavor of fresh ginger! I've used it for marinades in the past, but have started adding it to stir-frys. I use very little oil, saute garlic, onion and the fresh ginger with low sodium soy sauce before I throw in my veggies, what a flavor boost the ginger is! Even my hubby who didn't like stir-fry before is raving!
I wish I can find something like Sharon has (the food delivery service) in my area! It sounds like such a great idea, I might need to start investigating.
I have 3 young boys (and a husband too) ages 8, 6, and 3. So my trick for having them want to eat healthy is two-fold:
1. I do NOT make alternative meals for the kids. They eat what we eat, period. No tater tots for the kids and green beans for adults. Nope. As a result, my kids will eat a plate full of plain broccoli without thinking about it. MMM...
2. Information. I let them know what's healthy and what isn't. And I find they want to feel good about their choices, just like adults do.
My own personal secret for eating well is making homemade versions of comfort food. I grew up on southern cooking, so its not easy to give up some things like mac n cheese and rich soups and stews. But when I can make it from scratch (and use the same time as the box kind!) then I feel better about eating it especially because I know every single ingredient. And that way, healthy substitutions are much easier to incorporate.
Happy Eating!

Hi Sharon. I would like some information on the company you use to deliver your food. I'm interested in doing the same. Thank you.
